FAMILY PROMISE OF IRVING is a faith-based, nonprofit ministry that supports families who are experiencing homelessness as they search for jobs, undergo job training, and seek permanent housing. The ministry is affiliated with the national organization Family Promise, which began in New York City in 1986. Our mission is to provide a safe environment in which displaced families can stay together and receive the assistance they need to become self-sufficient.

Impact: Family Promise provides a safe, wholesome environment in which families can stay together in difficult times. We strengthen our community by strengthening our families. Children have a stable home and learning environment, supporting their education. Personal, one-on-one help is provided for families in danger of becoming lost in the system. Economically disadvantage children make up more than 70% of the Irving school district's enrollment. With no public shelter in Irving, and social service agencies overloaded, Family Promise has found a way to provide meaningful help by focusing on 3-5 families at a time, helping them meet identified goals in order to acquire permanent housing.

Project Availability:

Volunteer Responsibilities: Volunteers wishing to have contact with our families must go through a two-hour training covering issues of sensitivity, confidentiality and boundaries. Each volunteer must also submit to a criminal background check.

Option to Move Project to a Different Location: Collection drives for ongoing needs for the day center and families in the program, such as: towels; full-sized deodorant, body wash, body lotion and hair products; paper towels; toilet paper; cleaning products; Walmart/Target gift cards; gas cards. We are also working to replace 16 rollaway bed mattresses ($180 each) and in need of new kitchen/dining room flooring.
